Friends
of the Fakahatchee Strand |

This
group assists with goings-one at the park. Logging in the 1930s and
1940s here left large tracks throughout the forest, since cypress
logs (cut to use for naval stores) had to be removed with trams and
human help. Still, the park is trying to conduct an archaeological
survey soon, and the results should be interesting. This group produces
a newsletter called The Ghost Writer; PO Box 35 Everglades City 34139

Cemetery |

About
60 people are buried in this site, which was established in 1931.
Many of these people were early pioneers to the area and were considered
founding fathers of Collier County. In 1976, the site was donated
to Collier County. It is located south of Pine Ridge Road and about
100 feet east of U. S. 41. |
Elementary
Schools |
• |
Elementary
schools here seem to make a great effort to educate students about
Florida’s past, even beyond what may be needed for the FACT.
This is due of course to the special effort made by teachers. Naples
Park Elementary and Lely Elementary especially deserve recognition
for their efforts to involve students in the past! |

David Graham Copeland, engineer and architect for

County Historic Preservation Board |
• |
Collier County is large and much of it is held in federal and state
lands. However, county planners work closely with an historic preservation
board to review properties and issues that may be affected by changes
in land use. This site provides information on historic sites of interest
throughout the county, and also gives visitors access to the minutes
of past meetings. Additionally, it describes how you can designate
sites as historic.

Ochopee
Post Office |
• |
This
is the smallest post office in the country, large enough for just
one employee who has everything in the office within easy reach. This
building has existed since the mid-1950s, when a combined general
store and post office for Ochopee burned, along with much of the town.
Today's structure first existed as a shed housing farming equipment.
It was moved to its present location in order to continue to serve
as a Post Office. This site is located on the south side of U.S. 41
and approximately 1,000 feet east of Caldwell Road. |

Fakahatchee Strand State Preserve (west of Copeland along SR 29) mostly
known for orchids but now it is going to have an archaeological survey. |
Everglade |
• |
Today of course, this refers to the large expanse of watery land
in south Florida. The name first referred to a brand of produce
grown and sold by the Storter family of what is now known as Everglades
City, and later was used to refer to that land, as well as to towns
and other features found throughout the area. |
