Proposals Request
- Charlotte County has asked for proposals to conduct an archaeological survey of the county! This is great news for the county, and for archaeology. This project should be completed by the end of this year.
Oral History Projects
Oral history projects have been ongoing in several parts of this region. Bonita Springs Historical Society, the Clewiston Museum, and the Friends of the Museum of the Everglades have been collecting stories for “old timers” at various events. Making a permanent record of these projects and collecting photos and documents during these events would be a great idea for a pet project.
Everglades City Museum Birthday
Over 200 people attended the birthday party for the Everglades City Museum! People from Fort Myers, Naples, Marco Island, Everglades City, Miami, and Key West, and also from Maine, Massachusetts, and Kent (England) were present to listen to some oral histories and enjoy a parade of antique cars and enjoy the exhibits inside.
Three Oaks Extension Project
Three Oaks Extension project- this will be a four-lane highway through Lee and Collier counties (where it is called Livingston Road). This road will run along the Imperial River.
Lee Trust...
...for Historic Preservation asks all interested people to write letters to the Cape Coral mayor, urging that changes to the historic neighborhood near the yacht club and beach be reconsidered. Among the proposals are for boat ramps to be moved from the Redfish Point community. Call Gina Taylor (239) 344-0100 with any questions.
Curriculum Writing Workshop
Lee and Collier County teachers will participate in a curriculum writing workshop this summer, to incorporate archaeology (especially that of southwest Florida) into their lessons for elementary and middle school students. Stay tuned!
Audubon of Southwest Florida
...is interested in teaching citizens how to conserve rural lands, especially in Glades County
The Lemon Bay Conservancy
...seeks to acquire a significant archaeological site for preservation, with the assistance of the county commissioners in Charlotte.

Model of the Pineland Archaeological Site
The Good Shepherd school in North Fort Myers gifted the Southwest Regional Center with a beautiful model of the Pineland archaeological site this week. A link to the story of their creation and what inspired it can be found here in a News-Press article by Jonathan Namath. This project is an example of what dedicated and creative students can do with a wonderful teacher! Please stop by the pavilion at the Calusa Heritage Trail to see this project on display!

A Clay Smoking Pipe
...thought to be 2,000 years old was found during recent excavations at the Mound House on Fort Myers Beach! According to archaeologist Theresa Schober there, this is around the time tobacco first was used in Florida, so chemically dating substances found in this pipe may bring some exciting results! Also, work toward completing the museum portion of the public exhibit is going well, and restoration of the historic (1906) house on the property has begun.
